Effect of sodium selenite on sub-acute paraquat-induced toxicity in male rats

Acute paraquat (PQ) toxicity induces redox cycling leading to fatality in both man and animals with clinical management being supportive therapy due lack of specific effective antidote. This study thus aimed at determining the sero-biochemical pathological changes induced by acute PQ administration male rats mitigating role sodium selenite. Forty were used for grouped into 5 eight viz: Group I (control) administered distilled water (2 ml/kg), group II (15 mg/kg PQ), III + 0.3 selenite), IV (30 PQ) V selenite). Administration achieved per os lasted a week. Sera, lungs, liver kidney samples harvested end experiment. Result showed significant (p < 0.05) higher enzymes, urea creatinine treated groups when compared control. Biomarkers oxidative stress revealed increased superoxide dismutase malondealdehyde activities lungs liver. A dose-dependent pathologic lesion was also observed milder lesions selenium supplemented groups. The results demonstrate that supplementation may be promising should further clinically validated.
